This track is designed for second-year college and university students in intermediate programming, data structures, or software engineering courses. It builds on the object-oriented foundation from Year 1 and adds the practical skills needed to write robust, professional Java applications.
By the end of this track, students will be able to write Java applications that handle errors gracefully, work with external files, and manage complex data using Java's built-in data structures.

After completing Units 1 through 11, students will be able to:
- Apply all skills from the Year 1 track
- Handle checked and unchecked exceptions using try-catch blocks
- Create custom exception classes for application-specific errors
- Read from and write to text and binary files using Java I/O
- Process CSV and properties files
- Use ArrayList and LinkedList for ordered, dynamic collections
- Use HashSet and TreeSet for collections requiring unique elements
- Use HashMap and TreeMap for key-value data storage and retrieval
- Traverse collections using Iterator and the for-each loop
- Sort collections using Comparable and Comparator
Units 9 through 11 represent the topics that separate beginners from intermediate Java developers. Exception handling teaches students to write code that behaves predictably under failure conditions. File handling connects Java programs to real-world data. The Collections Framework replaces fixed-size arrays with flexible, efficient data structures used in virtually every professional Java application.
The College / University — Year 3 track completes the full course by adding Unit 12 on the Java Date and Time API and Unit 13, a comprehensive capstone project where students build and document a complete Java application.
