Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Improved automated quality checks to detect a broader range of invisible, control, and formatting characters.
    • Enhanced scanning so these checks also work reliably with files containing binary content.
    • No direct user-facing functionality changes are included in this release.

Walkthrough

The Dogfood Gate workflow updates invisible-character detection in the empty-lint job. It uses Unicode code-point escapes, adds control and format characters, and scans binary files as text.

Changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update invisible-character scan
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The pattern now uses Unicode code-point escapes and includes additional control and format characters. The scan uses grep -a to treat binary files as text.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7e71e

The workflow improves detection of invisible characters but can still miss leading BOMs and skip invalid UTF-8 files, allowing malformed content to pass CI. This bounded correctness gap should be fixed or explicitly accepted before relying on the gate as complete.

Add the required leading-BOM check.

PATTERNS contains \x{feff}, but this step performs only the grep -aPrl scan. The PR requirement calls for a separate check for a BOM at byte 0. Without that check, a file whose only invisible character is a leading BOM can pass the gate. Append the byte-level result to /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt before counting findings, and add a regression test.

Pull Request Overview

The PR successfully addresses the issue where the invisible-character gate failed to match intended patterns by adopting PCRE Unicode escapes (\x{...}) and the -a flag for grep. This ensures that multi-byte characters and files containing null bytes are correctly processed.

Codacy reports that the changes are up to standards. The review identified opportunities to optimize the CI workflow's performance and improve the clarity of the reporting output. No major security or logic flaws were found in the proposed fix.

line 172 ⚪ LOW RISK
Nitpick: The summary message states the number of 'issues', but since grep -l is used, the count actually represents the number of files containing one or more matches. Clarifying this in the summary avoids confusion.

Update the summary message to say 'Found issues in ${FINDINGS} file(s)' instead of 'Found ${FINDINGS} invisible character issue(s)'.

  • Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) using the new codepoint escape syntax
  • Verify detection of a C0 control character like Backspace (\x08)
  • Verify detection of Byte Order Mark (U+FEFF)
  • Ensure a file containing a Null byte (\x00) is scanned and flagged rather than skipped as binary
  • Ensure valid whitespace characters (TAB, LF, CR) do not trigger the gate

🟡 MEDIUM RISK

Suggestion: Optimize the find command for performance and remove redundant flags. Using + batches files into fewer process calls, and removing -r avoids redundant recursion logic.

138-149: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add a separate leading-BOM check.

The pattern includes \x{feff}, but this scan still relies only on grep -aPrl. The PR objective states that grep strips a leading BOM before PCRE matching, so the gate still misses the required leading UTF-8 BOM case. Add a byte-level check for EF BB BF and merge its result with the PCRE results using unique paths.

Handle invalid UTF-8 files in the invisible-character scan

grep -P with (*UTF) returns internal PCRE error: -23 for invalid UTF-8 input, even with -a. The workflow suppresses this error, so the file is omitted and later invisible characters can pass undetected. Use a byte-safe check or a matcher that accepts invalid UTF-8.
